Effects of Urban–Rural Medical Insurance Integration on Health: Evidence from Rural China
Bai, Jin, & Hua Li · Journal of Asian Economics, 2024, 101714
Urban–rural medical insurance integration aims to raise reimbursements for rural residents and ultimately improve their health.
Using China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) 2010–2018, the authors employ a time‑varying DID model to estimate impacts on physical and mental health among middle‑aged and elderly rural residents.
Results show sustained improvements in both dimensions of health.
Mechanisms include released medical demand, reduced financial burden, and increased trust in physicians.
The policy also indirectly boosts insurance enrollment willingness among low‑income rural elders, further enhancing service access and health.
Regular village‑committee announcements of policy updates amplify these positive effects.
